Frequently Asked Questions |
Registration QuestionsWhat do I need to bring to Registration? Bring a small wallet size photo of your child (about 2" square). If your child did not play soccer in the Florida Youth Soccer Association previously then you must bring a copy of a "State Certification of Live Birth" with affixed State Seal or certification. We do not have a copy machine at registration, so you must bring a photocopy of the birth certificate that we can keep for our (the state's) records. Hospital, Baptismal or religious certificates will not be accepted. Foreign passports/birth certificates are acceptable if accompanied by a certified translation. We will not be able to register your child without it. Why do you need photos and birth certificates? FYSA strictly enforces regulations for all affiliated clubs and provides additional insurance to registered players. Birth certificates are also used to verify player ages for FYSA insurance purposes. We will not be able to register your child without it. If you are transferring from another club you will need your player pass card, available from your previous club’s registrar. You also need to know your child’s social security number, doctor, and your insurance carrier/policy number. Also, please bring a wallet-sized photo for your child’s player pass that will be given to the referees before each game to verify that each child is eligible for the game. Photos are used for player-pass (ID) cards. Why do we register for seasonal soccer so early? To ensure delivery, we order uniforms months in advance based on estimated player numbers. We must thus limit the number of players to available uniforms. Once teams fill, a waiting list is kept. BYSL imposes a deadline for a final list of teams to be submitted by each club and penalizes the club for any schedule changes. Do I have to live in Satellite Beach to join SBSC? No, unlike Little League, soccer players are free to play with any club they want. SBSC accepts players from all over Brevard County. How do I get a refund of my registration? Refunds requests must be submitted in writing by filling out our refund request form available on our forms page. Can I request that my child play with another player or specific coach? *Only players that are siblings or are the sons or daughters of the head and one assistant coach are allowed to play on the same team by request. Satellite Beach Soccer Club (SBSC) will not allow special requests for teamates other than for the previous two examples. Recreational soccer players will be assigned a coach on a random draw basis. Our goal will always be to make the teams as evenly matched as possible. SBSC will not accept requests for a specific coach. *One way around this would be to convert an existing rec team or a group of willing players into a comp team. How are registration fees set and where do they go? As a non-profit organization, registration fees are determined by the club’s annual expenses less revenue from sponsorships, concessions, merchandise, and other fund-raisers. Approximately 30% of registration fees are spent on uniforms & trophies, approximately 30% on education, equipment, development and operating expenses, approximately 25% on referee fees and scheduling, and approximately 15% for FYSA & BYSL player and coach registration. You can help keep costs as low as possible by sponsoring the club and patronizing the concession stand. How are team age groups decided? The Cut-off for age assignment is August 1st. This is a USYSA and FYSA mandate. Follow the chart below to determine which age group your child falls under. Recreational (Rec) Soccer FAQs:What is recreational soccer? Rec soccer is organized soccer with an emphasis on fun and skill development. Rec soccer is also ideal for older players who are new to the game or those who can’t make the time or financial commitment required for competitive soccer. Are there any other costs for rec soccer? Parents take turns providing snacks and drinks for players. What equipment does my child need? All players must have shin-guards (worn under socks). Soccer shoes are recommended but not required until the U-10 age group (please, NO football or baseball cleats!). A ball and pump are also recommended. “Mini-kicker” starter kits are available for $25 at registration and include shin-guards, a ball, bag, pump, and a club logo T-shirt. All proceeds support your club. When will my childs team be practicing? Practice times are assigned by the club including the SBSC provided training sessions that will be held once each week at a specific time and location. How are teams selected? / Can I request a particular coach? All players are assigned to teams by a blind-draft method so we cannot honor special requests. SBSC’s goal is to make teams as equal in skill level as possible. The children of one coach and one assistant coach can play together on the same team. SBSC tries to keep same-age-group siblings together. Can my daughter play on a girls-only team? YES! SBSC is committed to providing girls teams in age groups U8U19 whenever possible. Can I switch my child to another team/club? Once registered, a player has an obligation to remain with her/his club for the seasonal year which begins with the fall and ends with State Cup match finals, usually in the first week of June. Strictly enforced rules prohibit moving players to another team/club without the approval of the current coach, the club’s registrar, BYSL (Brevard Youth Soccer League) and FYSA (Florida Youth Soccer Association). Additional fees will apply when you change clubs. If you have questions, please contact the registrar. How much playing time will my child get? BYSL rules require all rec players play at least one half of each game. Where and when are the games? For Spring 2008 season; All U6 games & U8 home games will be played at Seapark Field. U10-U-19 home games will be played at the Library Fields. Some away games require travel to nearby clubs. Most games are scheduled on Saturdays although a few may be scheduled on Sundays. Certified referees are present at all games. 2008 Fall - Spring 2009 Age Categories:

Do Comp Teams get end of season trophies? SBSC will provide an end of the fall season trophy to developmental soccer teams (comp teams ages U-9 through U-11). Beginning with the U-12 age group, comp teams will be expected to go out and earn their trophies.
What is competitive soccer? Comp soccer is a selective soccer program for players ages 8 and older seeking to advance their game to the highest levelusually with the help of professional trainers. Comp soccer emphasizes team development and winning, and it requires a greater commitment from players and parents. There is no guaranteed playing time. Teams play locally, regionally or may enter statewide tournaments. The best comp teams compete against others in Florida for the State Cup.
Does it cost more to play comp soccer? Yes. Comp registration does not include uniforms, monthly training fees, or tournament entry fees. Parents often find team sponsorships to offset these additional expenses.
How do I know if my player is ready for comp soccer? Does he/she dominate games within her/his age group? Has a coach suggested comp soccer? Is he/she getting more serious and ready to advance their skills to the next level?
How does my player get on a comp team? Playing comp soccer requires an invitation or a tryout. Coaches will offer positions to those players most able and qualified. See our website for up to date info on age group tryouts. Please note that once registered, a player has a moral obligation to remain with her/his team for the seasonal year. FYSA and BYSL prohibit moving players to another club without the approval of the current coach, the club’s registrar, BYSL, and FYSA. Additional fees apply.
What is the difference between Comp Teams vs. Rec Teams? Rec soccer is open to all players regardless of skill level and every player should receive at least 50% playing time. Competitive soccer requires a tryout or invitation and there is no guarantee of minimum playing time. BYSL competitve soccer teams begin at age 9. Competitive soccer also may include additional monthly training fees and a separate uniform fee ranging from $40 to $80 on top of registration fees. Travel distances may also increase for Competitive soccer teams. It is not uncommon for driving times of several hours to sites outside of Brevard county depending on the number of teams available in a given age bracket in Brevard county. Comp teams may also decide to participate in weekend tournaments throughout the year. Contact your teams' coach for information on training fees, uniform costs, likely travel distances and what tournaments might be scheduled for play.
Starting a Comp Team If you don't see an available comp team for your child's age group, you may be interested in starting a brand new Competitive Soccer Team. BYSL competitve soccer teams begin at age 9 and provide leagues for almost every age group i.e. 9, 10, 11, etc. This differs from the Rec program which only offers even numbered age brackets; 8, 10, 12, etc. The idea to "play at the next level" often begins when a recreational soccer team has had a very successful Rec soccer season. This is also a way that a group of players and their parents can go about assuring that they play for a specific coach. If you have such a coach in mind and he or she is comfortable coaching at a competitive level then contact us and we will help you get started. Basically, we would provide your coach with a time and location for open comp tryouts and help you get the word out around town. Another approach is for an existing fall Rec team to convert to comp for the spring. Caution: players from other clubs may not be approached to play for your team. "Poaching" is taken very seriously by the Florida Soccer governing bodies and coaches may be fined or loose their licenses to coach so remember, coaches, parents or players can't contact players from another club until after June State Cup Tournament finals when all soccer players are "free agents". If you have a group of players but no coach then you could appoint one of the parents as a Team Manager and hire a trainer to work with the team. Satellite Beach Soccer Club would be happy to assist you with finding a suitable trainer for your potential comp team. One last word, just because you had a successful rec season there is no guarantee that that will transfer to success at the comp level. Competition in Brevard County is quite daunting at the comp level so don't expect to go out and win a lot of games from the onset. There are also increases in expenses and travel distances compared to Rec Soccer programs. But if you are looking to play "at the next level" and to find more intensive training for your child then Competitive soccer may be for you.
Raising Money for a Team or Tournament It is common for soccer teams to raise money to pay their trainer fees, tournament entry fees etc. Team car washes or contributions from area business are two of the most common methods. We can help you raise money for your team by advertising for your team's sponsor on our website. For more information check out the fundraising section of our comp teams page.
What should Youth Sports be about? "Neither victory nor defeat should be blown out of proportion, and no coach should permit a child to define his or her self-worth purely on the basis of sport performance. By keeping sports in perspective, you can make them a source of personal growth and enrichment." This quote was taken from the source listed below. The entire article can be read here.
